During the holiday break, New Zealand and Australia celebrated Anzac Day to commemorate all of those who lost their lives fighting to keep our country safe for us all. In Flanders Field the poppies grew wild. The poppy is now a recognised symbol of Anzac Day, and the sale of them helps the old soldiers and the RSA. We designed our own poppies, then layered newspaper over the top. Next we painted them with appropriate colours. Finally we created a bright border using contrasting colours.
This term our theme has been Star Light, Star Bright. We have been learning research skills and report writing. Mrs Mullinger worked with us to design and create our own rockets. She also worked hard to make some attractive background pictures for our wall display. We intend to trial them during the holidays - we hope we get off the ground!
On Tuesday 22 June, Jane Lloyd visited to take drawing lessons with all of the students. Ruahine students recreated a still scene of a cycle helmet, computer and rock. We used the techniques of measuring the page so that the perspective was right and shading our drawing. Tyla helped us to mount them on black backing paper.
Earlier in the year we got together as a team and worked in groups to decide what sort of behaviours we would like to see at school, at home and in the community. Our parents and families wrote notes in our homework books about the great things we had done, which we showed to the daily recorder. Mr Knyn and Mrs Blithe talllied up the points to see who had won the prizes for this term. On Thursday 2nd July we had our Junior Neighbourhood Support prizegiving. Makayla was first, with Cassandra and Hannah Mc tying for second place. They all won vouchers to spend at The Warehouse (who were having a school holiday sale!!). Snr Sgt Mike Williams was particularly impressed with Chad, who had handed in a lighter that he found and also been honest when he found money on the floor at the disco. Well done, Chad - we are proud of you!Thank you to Constable McMellon, Mr Wealleans and Mr Foote who helped organise JNS for us, and to Mr Cruden for coming along. We are learning how to be responsible citizens, which will help us to make sensible choices when we are older.
